Restoring Confidence After Male Breast Cancer: Dave’s Story and Our Partnership with The Men's VMU
When people think about breast cancer, they rarely picture a man.
That silence can make an already difficult experience feel even more isolating. For men who undergo mastectomy surgery, the physical changes are often unexpected, and the emotional impact can take time to surface.
Through our partnership with The Men’s VMU, we invited a member of their community to receive a funded 3D nipple tattoo with NiP founder Lucy Thompson. The aim was simple. To raise awareness that this service exists for men too.
The Men's VMU is a UK-based community supporting men affected by cancer and other life changing health conditions. The organisation creates spaces, both online and in person, where men can connect openly, share experiences and access trusted information without stigma. Alongside peer support, The Men’s VMU works to raise awareness of men’s health issues, amplify underrepresented voices and encourage earlier conversations about diagnosis, recovery and life after treatment. Their focus is on community, understanding and making sure no man feels he has to navigate his health journey alone.
One member, Dave, came along to Lucy’s studio and chose to share his experience, to show other men the reality of receiving a medical tattoo.
“When I was diagnosed with male breast cancer and lost my nipple during surgery, I didn’t realise how much that small detail would affect how I saw myself. Thanks to NiP, I was able to have a beautifully tattooed nipple created, and it’s hard to describe what a difference it made. It restored not just the look of my chest, but my confidence and sense of wholeness. I’m deeply grateful to NiP for giving me back something I didn’t know I’d lost — my self-esteem.”
The Men’s VMU supports men affected by cancer and other life changing health conditions. Their work focuses on connection, community and breaking down stigma around men’s health.
By working together, we wanted to highlight an important message. Nipple tattoos after mastectomy are not just for women. Men deserve access to restorative options and clear information about their choices.
Many men tell us they did not know medical tattooing was available. Others assumed it would not look natural on a male chest. Dave’s experience helps challenge both of those assumptions.
The Men’s VMU is open to all men diagnosed with breast cancer, their aim to ensure you feel seen and heard, and to know you are not alone.
