FAQs

What is a 3D Nipple Tattoo?

Hyper-realistic or ‘3D’ nipple tattoos are permanent tattoos that give the illusion of being three-dimensional through highly skilled, artistic rendering. These tattoos can be done over scar tissue and reconstructions (including nipple protrusions) by our trained artists. Find out more.

Does it hurt?

There is a certain level of discomfort and slight 'tingling' sensation to be expected whilst getting a tattoo, but many people find that due to the scarring and reconstructive surgery little or no pain is felt. Our artists can also offer a skin calming agent if you wish.

How long will it take?

With an experienced artist, each nipple takes just approximately 20 minutes per session. You will usually have 2-3 sessions: the first to get the base coulours done, the second for details and highlights. The sessions are booked about 4-6 weeks apart to allow the skin time to heal. However, everyone's skin is different and on occasion due to scar tissue not accepting ink easily, it can take several sessions over a number of months.

Will I need touch-ups?

Unlike micropigmentation tattoos, the pigments used by NiP artists are permanent. Skin tone can change over time so if you find that a few years down the line you'd like to give your tattoo some attention, our artists can do that for you. However in most cases, after 2-3 initial sessions, your tattoo will be set and regular touch-ups shouldn't be neccessary.

Can I try a temporary nipple tattoo first?

You certainly can! We provide specialist 'nippleback' temporary tattoos in a range of styles and shades that last up to a week, so you can test out and get a feel of what you're most comfortable with. Find out more.

Is tattooing dangerous?

There are many misconceptions about tattooing, some of which we cover here, but tattooing is just as safe as any micropigmentation work received in a medical facility. All NiP artist tattoo studios will follow extremely high levels of hygenie, using medical-grade cleaning products. All our artists receive qualifications in Infection Control to be aware of risks and how to minimise them. You will receive thorough aftercare advice from your artist on how to look after your tattoo safely.

How is this different from Permanent Makeup (PMU) treatments?

PMU inks comprise mainly of iron oxides, which are designed to fade over time. They can also interfere with MRI scans. Professional tattoo inks are also perfectly safe and are designed to be permanent.

How is this different from what the NHS offers?

The NHS is an incredible service, however their staff are trained as medical professionals, not tattoo artists. NiP works with a network of indipenent artists who are all highly skilled with years of experience in tattooing, and are able to create highly realistic renderings of nipples, that are permanent. By offering this service, we are also releiving the NHS of absorbing the cost of providing nipple tattoos, which can be up to £900, and allowing staff to focus their time and energy on the life-saving work they do.

Will it damage my implant?

No. During the tattoo process, the depth of the needle is only going approximately 1.6mm in to the skin, so will not come in to contact with an implant.

Can I custom design other than a nipple ?

Yes. All our artists also do regular tattoos and are able to work with different designs. As custom designs will have differnt time and consultation requirements to a nipple tattoo, please contact your chosen artist about the options and what funding may be available.

How much does it cost?

Nipple tattoo costs will vary depending on the artist. However, by finding an artist through NiP, we can help to partially or fully fund the treatment.
